Lunger Estate Makes Major Contribution to Equine Research
| |
The Jane duPont Lunger Residual Charitable Trust recently made a $250,000 contribution to Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, Inc., which funds veterinary research specifically on the horse. Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has funded 200 projects for more than $12 million at 32 universities since 1983. "Mrs. Lunger typified a sporting love of racing and of the horse throughout her career," said Edward L. Bowen, president of the foundation, "and we are very grateful to her family, and trustees of her estate, for this extraordinary gift. We particularly appreciate the support of her daughter Annie and her husband, Richard I. G. Jones, in the decision to provide for equine research with such generosity." Mrs. Lunger created Christiana Stable with her late husband, Harry Lunger, in 1937, and raced a series of prominent horses for many years, until her death in 2001. The 1989 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and two-time Eclipse Award winner Go for Wand was perhaps Christiana's most famous homebred. She was a daughter of the stable's distinguished mare Obeah, which won consecutive runnings of the Delaware Handicap in 1969 and 1970. Smart, Thinking Cap, Endine, Salem, Cyane, and Light Hearted were among other prominent Christiana runners. | |
